Yesterday, we exchanged theory for practice with some enthusiastic members of our photography club during an engaging sports photography workshop. We took our cameras and (tele)lenses to the sports hall of Tielt, where we had the unique opportunity to observe a vigorous volleyball training session.
Sports photography is a significant challenge. It’s about anticipating, finding the perfect timing, playing with shutter speeds, and mastering the tricky artificial light of a sports hall. We tried to capture the fast-paced actions: the focus of the players, the sweat, the power of a smash, and the defence high at the net.
But besides the sporting action on the field, it was also wonderful to see what was happening off the lines. As the atmosphere images show, everyone was intensely focused on finding the perfect shot. There was experimentation with creative angles: we saw members crouching along the sidelines, leaning against the walls, and even sitting comfortably on the ground. And although the focus was high, there was – as evidenced by the playful glances towards each other’s lenses – plenty of room for humour and camaraderie.
A big thank you to the players of Tievolley for their commitment to our lenses and the hospitality in the hall. It was an incredibly educational evening that definitely leaves us wanting more. We can’t wait to admire the final results from all the members!
